New venue for Sekforde Arms meetings

As mentioned at our January Sekforde event, we have decided to relocate these meetings and hold them on different days of the week, which will hopefully make it easier for more people to come along.

Due to the AGM in February, our next meeting will be on Wednesday 14th March at our brand new north London venue, The Square, 26 Tolmers Square, London, NW1 2PE. The Square is a traditional pub, conveniently situated close to Euston Square and Warren Street underground stations.

Meetings will continue to follow the same informal format- a talk by a leading professional, followed by questions and time for networking over a light buffet.

Details of our March meeting will be circulated in our next newsletter, as will dates for future 2012 meetings.

Feedback from our first Sekforde Arms event of 2012: Emma Davidson

Copyright after the Hargreaves Report

The first CILIP in London meeting of 2012 took place on Monday 9th January at the Sekforde Arms. It featured copyright guru Charles Oppenheim, who spoke to a packed audience about the potential implications of the Hargreaves Report for copyright legislation in the UK.

Charles is an excellent speaker and everyone in the room appeared to find his talk interesting and informative, and judging by the range of questions at the end it certainly provoked a lot of thought.
In brief, UK copyright law is in a mess – outdated and anachronistic, it fails to reflect what people actually do with material and is in danger of becoming completely obsolete. Furthermore, the 3-strikes-and-you’re-out rule imposed by the Digital Economy Act 2010 is a dreadful piece of legislation. Apparently the Hargreaves review was commissioned on a totally erroneous basis, but it managed to get beyond this and produce some eminently sensible recommendations. Amongst other things, it advocates a number of extensions to the current exemptions from copyright law, and proposes the establishment of an agency to manage copyright issues for orphan works.

Charles predicted that although the government currently seems minded to accept most of the Hargreaves recommendations they are likely to be considerably watered-down following intense pressure by rights-holders. A call for evidence is currently open, and a number of submissions are being prepared by the library and archive community. However, it is important that as much relevant evidence as possible is gathered so we are all encouraged to make additional submissions if at all possible. The text of the Hargreaves review and details of the call for evidence can be found at http://www.ipo.gov.uk/ipreview

Interested to find out more? Richard Hawkins kindly recorded the talk and you can download the podcast from http://www.cilip.org.uk/get-involved/regional-branches/london/Pages/default.aspx.

In case you haven't been to one of these talks yet I strongly recommend them - it's a chance to hear some great speakers in an informal environment, and the evening always ends with nibbles and networking. Even better, attendance is free for CILIP members (non-members are also welcome at a charge of just £5). Do be sure to book your place in advance though, as they often sell out!

Meet the Committee

The committee has welcomed several new faces over the last few months so in each newsletter we will be profiling members of CILIP in London.

This month we are pleased to introduce President, Peter Beauchamp and committee members Alan Fricker and Tina Reynolds. All are actively involved in our events programme, so you may have already met them at a CILIP in London gathering.

Peter Beauchamp
Peter was for many years Chief Library Adviser to the Government in DCMS – a post which no longer exists!! – and in latter days Head of the Department’s local government operations. He once worked for the then Library Association. After DCMS, he was briefly Director of Library Services for Instant Library Ltd and then entered the twilight area of retirement. Now, of course, he’s busier than ever, partly with CILIP in London but also with a charity he has helped to establish – the BJC British Judo Foundation - for which he is Secretary.

Alan Fricker
Alan is the Knowledge & Library Service Manager at Newham University Hospital NHS Trust. He has worked in the NHS for over ten years. He has at various times been Chair of Health Libraries Group (HLG), on the CILIP Defining our Professional Future Project Board and active in other committee roles and networks.

Tina Reynolds
Tina is Senior Information Officer at Drivers Jonas Deloitte, a professional services firm specialising in property consultancy. She has been on the CILIP in London committee since 2008 and is also New Professionals Support Officer for the Career Development Group (London and South East divisions).

Making the most of CPD opportunities at work: Amy Icke

As someone at the start of their career, currently studying for an MA in Library and Information Studies, I am exceptionally lucky to benefit from lots of CPD opportunities. But what happens when you’ve been in the same role for a number of years and funding for training seems hard to come by?
Here are a few ideas on how to make the most of training opportunities available in your own workplace-

Work shadowing- this could be particularly useful if you are thinking of promotion or moving to a different department and want to see what a job involves. Shadowing placements can range in length from a couple of hours to a few days, so it should be easier to fit them in with other work commitments.

Mentoring and coaching- lots of information professionals will be mentored during Chartership or when working towards other professional qualifications, but having an experienced mentor with a listening ear and lots of practical advice could be useful at any point in your career.

Distance learning- if you don’t feel you want to or can’t afford to take time out from work by pursuing a course part-time, then you might find distance learning is the answer. This gives you the opportunity to work at your own pace and to fit study around work.

Job rotation- this might not be possible in all organisations or it might be the ‘norm’ in smaller ones, where staff carry out a variety of roles. Job rotation allows you to acquire new skills and get a better sense of how different departments support and interact with one another.

In-house training and workshops- organisations often run regular workshops, led by both external trainers and in-house experts. These help employees update their skills and offer an opportunity to network with colleagues.

If you've got some practical advice or good ideas about any aspects of your work why not share them? We are always keen to hear from readers so do get in touch with your ideas, opinions and suggestions.

Due to the success of our previous workshops on ‘Reflective Practice’ and ‘Copyright’ we may be offering a re-run, so look out for further information.

Alan Green attended both workshops and here are his comments on the copyright workshop. He's also blogged on the reflective practice event, it’s here: http://t.co/cOys1OL4

Copyright Workshop

Copyright is a hard area to stay on top of. Legal changes and changes in interpretation or in the available advice can leave people feeling that the landscape is shifting around them. This is worrying because the consequences of getting lost can be serious.

We need an expert guide. Enter Kate Vasili, the Copyright Officer for Middlesex University and the speaker for this very useful event. CILIP in London organised this workshop to give us a chance to explore copyright with someone who knows the territory well.

Kate began with an overview of copyright law. Then we looked at the various exemptions particularly the ones which apply to education and library work. Apparently the famously vague ‘insubstantial amount’ isn’t clearly defined because we should focus on the quality of the information rather than the quantity. It’s nice to know they’re not just being difficult. We also had an enlightening look at the available licenses.

Attendees who were there to catch up on the latest developments weren’t disappointed. We discussed recent changes to the law. We were also updated on the government’s on-going attempts to plan the future of copyright. So far they’ve had lots of reviews. When that does lead to actual action we will be ahead of the game.

The workshop covered a range of other issues including creative commons and the problems surrounding international legal differences. We all left with a much clearer idea of how to find our way through the potentially tricky landscape of copyright.

Alan Green

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Feedback from Elly O'Brien who attended the ‘Reflective Practice’ workshop

On 17th November, CILIP in London held a half day workshop on Reflective Practice. The speakers, Paula Nottingham and Rosemary McGuinness, are both lecturers in work-based learning at Middlesex University (http://www.mdx.ac.uk/wbl).

Paula provided a theoretical background to reflective practice, guiding us through some of the key theorists in the field. These theoretical models were useful in providing us with tools for effective reflective practice and Paula provided a substantial reference list (available at: http://www.slideshare.net/paulanottingham/cilip-reflective-practice-paula-nottingham-171111).

Reflective practice is a vital tool in work-based learning; therefore the workshop included a number of activities, allowing us to put theory in to practice. These included a learning log, where we wrote about a particular task or event at work. This structured form of reflection was useful because it helped to tease out learning points from the task/event.

Rosemary’s presentation included longer activities, including one where we reflected on our feelings around a particular event. Although professionalism dictates, we control our emotions at work. This exercise revealed that emotion was inextricably linked with workplace experience; therefore emotional reflection is also important.

Above all, Paula and Rosemary showed that reflective practice is not a one-off activity. It is not to be reserved for trouble shooting when things go wrong or for Chartership portfolios. We can all incorporate reflective practice into our work, whether it be keeping a reflective journal, encouraging reflective activities within our organisations or simply taking some time to reflect on events.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now some feedback on our CPD23 linked event from Alan Fricker (Alan.Fricker@newhamhealth.nhs.uk)

Back in July Cilip in London organised an event to tie with the CPD23 programme. With a title like “Thing 7: regional and national groups, special interest groups – in real life” it would have been rude not to.

A large group of diverse participants turned up on the night for a series of brief power point free talks followed by group discussions and then networking (CDG London & SE kindly supported the cost of wine and nibbles).

We recently followed up with participants to see if our favourable impression of the event was more widely felt.

Feedback was positive with people reporting being keen to get more involved in professional networks and enjoying the opportunity to share experiences while meeting a range of people outside their current contacts.

Suggestions for future events were made with strong support for more informal networking events, links to literature festivals and visits. We will work to respond to these suggestions in 2012.

The CPD23 programme meant that people should be blogging their experiences – you can read a small number of the resulting blog posts below

Cilip in London Committee

"Several new members have joined the Committee and a full list of the
2012 membership will be in the next newsletter. Meanwhile, here's a comment from one of the new members, Amy Icke, who is an Assistant School Librarian and will be helping out with these newsletters in future.” Peter Beauchamp (President)

“I wanted to get involved with CILIP London after attending the networking event they hosted as part of CPD 23. I also chatted to a number of colleagues and read several blog posts voicing the benefits of getting involved in committee work. I received a warm welcome at my first meeting and look forward to becoming more involved with the branch's activities in the new year. Lots of different sectors of librarianship are represented on the committee and I am keen to pool our shared knowledge so we can continue to bring an exciting programme of events to our members." Amy Icke

Message from the Editor of Cilip in London e-bulletin – Lesley Randall

I joined the committee in December 2008, working towards Chartership. In February 2010 I took on an unexpected role of editor of the newsletter. I have thoroughly enjoyed the role and have acquired new skills in the process. Now that we have several new members, it’s a good opportunity to step down (but not from the committee!) and give someone else a new experience. So this is my last issue and the January e- bulletin will be produced by Emma Davidson, assisted by Amy Icke.

Emma says “ As well as news of events and other activities, I'd really like to know what sort of things you want to read about in your branch newsletter, so please let me know if you have any requests or ideas. You can contact me directly at emma.davidson@royalsociety.org or via cilipinlondon@gmail.com. I've worked in libraries since 2004, studied my MA LIS at UCL, and am currently Information and Promotion Officer at the Royal Society - a job I particularly enjoy as it allows me to explore ways of promoting a fascinating historical collection using 21st century technology.

Time: 6.30pm
Venue: The Sekforde Arms, Sekforde Street London EC1

Libraries of all types are under pressure to adapt in the current economic climate. Increasingly they are joining consortia to cut costs, streamline operations and have stronger voices when dealing with systems suppliers, publishers and database aggregators. But do consortia provide an effective alternative to outsourcing? And to what extent do they benefit users?

Will’s presentation will look at issues, such as governance and integration, that affect libraries of all types and encourage further debate.

Will Blackburn has worked in library supply since graduating in 1998, having read Publishing at university. Since joining Civica six years ago, he has worked on a range of Library transformation and system integration projects.

This talk will be of particular value to anyone registered for CILIP Chartership and can contribute towards CPD requirements.

We encourage you to blog or tweet about this event - but please be sure to include the contact information.

CILIP in London evening meetings are open to all with a professional interest in the topic. Refreshments will be available afterwards.
